Health insurance is important. Everyone should have it and we get all that. But life still happens. Nobody is perfect and things get put on the backburner. Medical bills however are still the top reason people file bankruptcy in America. That is why having health insurance is so crucial.

Unfortunately for some, they may not have heath insurance or might have to wait until an open enrollment period to get coverage. So what are some ways someone could still help protect themselves even without health insurance?

#1.) Eat Healthy

What you eat has a big influence on your health. There are many health benefits to having balanced diet. It is important to make good decisions when grocery shopping and become aware of how often you eat out.

#2.) Don’t Smoke

Smoking has be tied to many life threatening illnesses. If you don’t smoke already, don’t. If you do, find support to finally kick the old habit.

#3.) Get Exercise

Physical exercise has proven to help prevent many different health issues. Exercise has shown to improve cardiovascular health, mental health, and immunity. Try to exercise 5 days week for around 30 to 60 minutes, but remember that any amount of exercise is better than none at all.

#4.) Practice Safe Sex

We all got needs, but that doesn’t mean we can’t minimize the downside consequences of those needs. Some health issues are totally avoidable with a little common sense and self-control. Not just STDs or STIs. Pregnancies can also be very expensive without health coverage.

#5.) Try Mindfulness Meditation

Mediation is great (and free) way to improve mental health and control stress. It has also been shown to improve sleep and may help with addictions.
