With prescription drug costs constantly on the rise, one should utilize all the tools they have to save on their costs. Here are a few strategies and tips I will share with you. Please note: I do not represent any of the discount programs I may suggest. Moreover, I do not represent any specific pharmacies. What I am about to share with you are simple, yet effective, tips and suggestions that the ordinary person might not be aware of, that might help them save on prescription costs.

#1.) Prescription Discount Programs & Coupons

Prescription discount programs can help significantly reduce the cost of monthly refills and prescriptions. Many websites like GoodRx.com offer free coupons that almost anyone can use. Some websites like PrescriptonHope.com offer brand name drugs starting at $50 per month to those who qualify.

#2.) Compare Pharmacies

It’s actually quite incredible how much drug pricing can differ from one pharmacy to the next. It’s a good idea to do your research and look for the best deals. Some retail pharmacies will offer their own discount just for shopping there. Others, such as Walmart, will offer low cost pricing on many common generic prescriptions (like lisinopril & metformin) to anyone.

#3.) Ask for Generic

Understand that brand name drugs and generic drugs have the same active ingredients. You should always follow your doctors advice, but it doesn’t hurt to ask for generic prescriptions. This alone can save you big, especially if you’re already taking brand named medication and there is a appropriate generic you can take.

#4.) Ask for a 90 day Supply

If you are taking routine medication, like high blood pressure or cholesterol, you might want to look into getting a 90 day supply. This could help to reduce the cost, since you’re essentially buying in bulk. Also, this could be more convenient than physically going to the store each month.

#5.) Avoid Needing a Prescription in the First Place

This is the one you don’t want to hear, but probably the most important. The best way to save money on prescription costs is by not having any to begin with. This means, avoiding circumstances that give your high blood pressure. This means, taking care of yourself and putting a priority on your health. So many people want the “quick fix.” Take a serious look inside yourself and ask, Am I doing everything I could be doing, to avoid needing to take new medications in the future?
