When shopping for health insurance, most of us have one big question:

“What does this plan cover?”

While that is a fair question, sometimes it’s too easy to be focused on just one aspect of the plan. In many cases, shoppers will waste a good amount of time looking for a product the doesn’t exist.

With that said, here are 3 interesting things health insurance usually does not cover.

#1.) Elective Surgery

Most surgeries that are not considered life threatening or life altering, will usually not be covered by health insurance. So elective surgeries such as breast implants, Botox treatment, and gender changes are not services you should expect to be covered.

#2.) Injuries & Illnesses related to War

Insurance companies typically won’t cover the damages caused by war. This is because such an event could result in so much damage, that it would likely bankrupt the insurance companies if they had to cover it.

In the US, Veterans Affairs (the VA) usually offers healthcare to those who have served. In addition, “War Risk Insurance” could be an option for businesses and individuals faced with significant risks of war.

#3.) Traveling Outside the United States

Most health insurance policies you purchase will only provide coverage within the United States. Those who plan on traveling abroad may want to consider looking at International Health Insurance. This type of policy could still help keep your out-of-pocket expenses to a minimum if an unexpected event were to occur while you’re out of the country.

If you have any questions about health insurance, always speak with a licensed professional.
